Only abyssinian guinea pigs or every guinea pig likes something behind them2007-11-24 22:13:22

if I hold my abyssinian guinea pig, many times he will keep moving backwards all until there is something behind him, so I put my hand on his back and then he feels safe.

this is how abyssinian looks like

you can even see that his hair grows in a different way. its not like other guinea pigs, when hair goes from head to back. but on this one is messed, like if they need a comb.

every guinea pig likes something on their back or just this breed?

I also have abyssinian guinea pigs, and mine do the same thing. I have 4 of them, and I can't pink them up unless one hand is behind them. They'll start scratching and stuff. It's just a trait that varies between pigs. Not all of them act the same. Mine only like it when I pick them up.

I'm willing to bet it's more of an individual personality trait than a breed trait. I have one abyssinian and one American. They're both older (4 & 5 years old), and I've noticed that the smooth coat American prefers to hide, whereas my abyssinian likes to explore. He doesn't seem to need to have anything behind him - on the contrary, he prefers to be running around rather than cooped up in a corner.
very observant! I think all piggies love to have support behind them.
My two pigs (one of which was a fancy hair, the other a smooth) didn't like being picked up much. When I did they always seemed a little more comfortable when my hand was under their rumps too! I think that's common to many pets because it makes them feel more secure. Babies (human babies, that is) also benefit from the "hand under the tush" style of being carried.

(I also noticed that they tended to back into a corner of the cage when scared or mad.)

I have had Abbysinians and non-abyssinians. It is probably just YOUR guinea pig... because mine have never been like that. He probably just likes to feel safe and kind of hidden in a corner.

I love Abys! They have naughtier attitudes compared to most breeds.

edit ---

I just saw a photo of your guinea pig in the question about the eye that you asked. He is a Pervuvian - not an Abyssinian. :-)
