would you perfer guinea pigs or rats

Ok, this is hard because I've had, and loved, both. The guinea pig was like a little clown, but wasn't very cuddly and could be jumpy. She was also prone to nipping, but again, there's nothing like hearing "WEEEET!! WEEEET!!" from the next room when you open the veggie drawer. They live longer than rats too and are less prone to escaping.

Rats are great too. They're very social and love being held and played with. They too can be little clowns, but they're very smart too! We taught ours to push spools, sit up and come when their name was called. The downside to their intelligence is that they are quite the escape artists, LOL. Find a good cage that doesn't have a lot of edges they can chew on and chew out of. They need companionship and crave attention from their owners without been really "needy." Our rats greeted us every time we'd come into our livingroom. The downside is that they don't live very long and are prone to cancers. They can live to be around 7, but are more likely to only live 1 to 3 years. All of our rats died of cancer of one kind or another before the age of 3.

Both animals can be stinky if you don't clean out their cages regularly as well.

If I had the choice right now, I'd pick rats. Sometimes they remind me of little people with the way they act, LOL.

Guinea pigs have always been to nervous and spastic for me. Rats are nimble, smart, and less smelly!
