PLEASE help me with rats
The bird, the fish, the bunny, and the turtle all seemed like they'd be much happier living in the wild, even though they were each bought at a pet store. The bird, the bunny, and the turtle always seemed to want to get out of the cage and then were hard to keep nearby and harder to catch to put back in the cage, but Edgar shows the results of being one of a species bred for decades to be kept as a pet.
He is sociable with people and isn't stressed by living with a family, as many other pets are. He can live happily in a modest space, he's inexpensive to keep and presents no risk to anyone's health. And just to make him perfect, he's also cute and can be handled better than many other pets.
In case your family thinks that I'm some kind of weirdo, I'll tell you that I'm middle aged, I am employed at a school, I have four children--three of them grown and doing well, one still at home. I've been a girl scout leader and a religious ed teacher and I'm about as exciting as a piece of dry toast. If I can appreciate a pet, one more thing to take care of, then it must be a pretty great pet.
I hope you'll be able to get your pet. I was absolutely opposed to getting the ratty until we had him and then he really did charm me.
Rats are one of the best small animal pets one can own. People generally don't like them because rats are often thought of as "dirty" and "diseased" even though this is NOT TRUE AT ALL. Rats are very social, very sweet and can even learn tricks. Just keep reading books and reading more testamonials from rat owners.
