Rats are very intelligent animals. They make great pets, they can be trained, answer when you call them, and rarely bite. Without a doubt I would choose a rat over most small animals, like hamsters. There is a difference between rats that are used to feed and rats for pets.

Just because rats have a bad reputation, doesnt make them bad pets.

I've had two pairs of rats in the past few years.they're very friendly. Ours like to get up on our shoulders and run around on our couches...just make sure they don't chew on your furniture. They are simply cute and sometimes we talk to them a little bit. We give them food in the morning, but we also like to give them food scraps because they are so cute when they eat. Suprisingly none of our rats have ever had an inclination to bite..we aren't sure why, but we have never been bitten by a rat. They do have sharp "toenails" when they are walking around on your shoulder, so you might have some scratches from them. Also, tell your dad and sister that they are cute, but domestic rats probably don't spread diseases..a good thing to do is wash your hands after you handle the rats. Personally i think rats are fun because you don't have to walk them.

Good luck. I basically gave my parents no choice but to deal with my rat, I've eased them into it. I brought home one.. But they will probably get upset when they find out I'm getting four more because I'm in love =P.

Once agian good luck convincing your mom and dad about rats, as for your sister: she's probably giving you a hard time because she's your sister. Don't mind her too much.
