Pet Mice breeding

Pet Mice breeding2007-11-24 22:14:08

allright i have 4 pet mice. 1 female and 3 males. not an accident. well the female is pregnant i beleve and i wondered if the other males will eat the babys. please give me an answer. and supprisingly all my mice get along togather.

Answers:

I would play it safe and move the males out from the female (I'm assuming you have already) And because mice can get pregnant right after giving birth, which is extremely hard on their bodies.

I also wouldn't let you mice near your female anymore to prevent additional litters. If you plan on giving away the babies, I'd let one of your female's daughters live with her so she's not lonely. While male mice can be alone and live fine, female mice benefit greatly from having a same-sex cagemate.

(EDIT: Do NOT take the babies away from the mother until they are 3-4 weeks old! They need to be with their mother until then! After they are about 4 weeks, you can then seperate the sexes.)

Good luck! :)

In most cases the males will kill the young of another male. When breeding mice it's better to have several females with one male. The male will usually not bother the babies if he is the father. Just having more than one male in the same cage with the babies is enough to get the babies killed.
They MIGHT eat the babies, so dont take any chances. Put the males in a seperate box during the ast week of pregnancy so that when the mother gives birth, she wont get any nasty suprises. Also, if she is suprised, she can swallow some of her babies, so that is a bad idea. And a week or so after the mother has the babies, then remove them from her- they reproduce! unless that's what you want
remove all males to another cage. they are a danger to both her and the babies. you also have the ratio wrong. it's supposed to be one male to one or more females if you are breeding. e-mail me for more information. do not take the pups out until they are four weeks of age and have them seperated by sex by five weeks of age. do not put a male in with her until the pups are weaned.
seperate the mamma
