Pet or wild rat2007-11-24 22:14:09

I am American living in The Netherlands and I have a pond in the back yard. Just now I keep seeing this large white and brownish/gray smooth coat rat. To me, it looks just like any pet rat you would buy at a pet store. I have seen the wild rats here and they are larger all brown and scraggily looking.

I am wondering if this is someone's pet rat that's gotten loose or if the wild rats here look like this.

If its tame you will be able to put some food out and it won't run away when you go near it but wild rats can be coloured if there bred with a pet that has got loose and is now wild.

Add on do you no that rats are one of the cleanest animals.it sounds like you might have a new pet.

I wouldn't take any chances it could be someones pet but you shouldn't take the chance it could have a disease and it may bite you!!

I would say that it is likely that it is either an escaped pet rat or the offspring of an escaped pet rat with wild rats. The coloring you suggest is more indicative of fancy rats.
