Pet rat being dominated by baby rat
i have 2 beautiful pet rats. one is about 3months old, i rescued her befor she was about to be killed because she has a week/deformed leg, and was being harrassed and abandond by the rest of the litter, she was skinny and timid.
she is very calm and friendly and now very healthy. 2wks ago a got her a baby rat to give her company. a always see them grooming each other, most of the time the baby is dominating her whilst she lies on ther back. she has had twp small scabs around her neck and i am concerned that she is being bullied by the baby.
is this the case and if so what should i do?
getting rid of the baby is not an option.
thanx for ur help
Answers:if the scabs are small and on her neck it maybe from over grooming. rat's nails are sharp and when they scratch themselves like a dog or cat they can cut their skin with their nails. my one female abbey, had scabs on her face and neck and at first i thought the same thing that you did, she was getting beat up on. i trimmed her nails back with baby toe nail clippers and the scabs are now gone. by the way trimming a rat's nails is not easy to do and you may want someone else there to help you hold the rat while you trim.
the other thing it might be is that she is being dominate, you said that you got her 2 weeks ago and you have to do proper introductions between rats. you should have quarantined the new girl for at least 3 weeks before evening introducing her to your other girl. reason being if your new girl has any type of illness your other rat is now sure to get it, vice versa.
