You cant find a better pet then a rat. They are as intellegant as a dog. I currently have15 rats and they are soo smart everytime I come near they automatically come running. In fact I have one sitting on my shoulder right now. Rats are very affectionate and not half as gross as snakes. Plus, Rats dont bite unless they have babies(as I recently found out) That become devoted to their masters just like dogs. I couldnt imagine living without them. Rats can also sense danger. Our rat once smelled smoke and started going crazy trying to get out of its cage to warn us. Thankfully it was just the neighbor cooking, lol. But rats are great but you get whatever suits you, good luck with your little friend whatever it may be!

Both are fun, but a rat is at least a little bit more responsive and affectionate than a snake (and you can train them).

We have both of them. My daughter has a albino lavender king snake plus we have 11 rats. Some however rats are up for adoption. We don't live feed her (snake) and mice or rats only frozen fuzzies we get from a pet store.

We also have mice, Syrian hamsters, dwarf hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, cats, dogs, cockatiels, a few fish, a tarantula, an iguana, a wolf hybrid, a Pygmy goat and a red sheep. They are kept at my home and not in a shelter or pet store.

Well, if you have any attachment to rats, than a pet snake might be hard to care for.
