Re above answer: Rats are altra-sensitive when taken outside because their wild cousins are burrowing animals and would be staying in their burrows during the hot hours of the day, where they would be staying cool. Pet rats have maintained this same sensitivity and would prefer to be cool rather then hot. An over-heated rat will "pancake", lie very flat to distibute body heat. They will do this if your house is hot during the summer. Imagine how they will feel about the heat if you take them outdoors. Light colored rats are easily sunburned when outside, and the bright sun is too hard on their neon-pink eyes.

nope there really isint much you can do. it's a natural thing. There isin't any special needs to my knowledge and i currently own 4 of them. the only thing i could possibly think of is if you were going to take them outside. because of their lack of pigment, they will be more susceptible to being sunburned, so keep them in the shade.

I'm not sure if it would work, but there is a cleaning solution intended for white dogs; to clean around their eyes, where it gets stained from their tears. This might work for the rat. it is an animal care product, so I would think it should not harm him. maybe just try a spot on his back, and leave it for a week, to be sure he doesn't have a reaction (much like people should do when using new products).
