Plastic or glass aquarium for a gerbil2007-11-24 22:14:33

i'm gonna get a gerbil but i need a 10 gallon cage.i need to know wich is better plastic or glass.glass tanks are heavy and hard to clean. plastic tanks are lighter and easier to clean but they get scrached. Also if you know where to get one of these 10 gallon cages can you tell me?

P.S im talking about gerbils

Neither, in my opinion. Glass tanks do not provide great ventilation, which causes odor and potential respiratory complications in your pet.

Plastic looks good, but by experience, gerbils often find a way to chew out of them. Not a good thing.

Consider a wire cage with a metal bottom. I suggest those for ANY rodent. Wonderful air ventilation, and they can chew all they want, and not get loose in your house.

I like the plastic cages because you can get tubes to connect them just in case you decide to get more later. Glass is heavy and could break. Plastic works the best and they sell them at pet stores and wal-mart.

you don't need an aquarium for a gerbil. Just get one of the larger hamster/gerbil cages that are made of plastic. They are easy to clean and are not that expensive. :) good luck!

true, the glass could break, but there are also metal cages, they sell them at random people that own a store for pets.

Glass cages are hard to clean, not well ventilated, and hard to accessorize. Plus they don't give enough room for small animals that like to climb and run, even with a wheel installed. My dwarf hamsters are much, much happier in their 2-floor wire cage, and I'm much happier because it's easy to clean!

the best cage is one with both plastic and wire. a fish tank or plastic tank is a bad idea because it doesn't have enough air flow and the odors and amonia are consentrated and can be very harmful. however, full wire cages aren't good because they can be too drafty. however, petstores carry cages with both wire (for airflow) and plastic (so it doesn't get too drafty) which are PERFECT for hamsters and gerbils :-)
