Plastic or glass aquarium for a gerbil2007-11-24 22:14:33

1. Glass is easy to clean. I get a trash bag, remove all the toys, put it on the floor and tip the tank and pour the litter and gerbil into a plastic bag.

I quickly fill the tank with fresh litter, scoop the gerbil out of the bag, and put him and his toys back in. When ventilation is good I use a disinfectant wipe on the bottom of the tank before putting litter back in.

2. Plastic scratches and is messy plus gerbils shred it.

3. Wire/mesh cages are bad for gerbils because *drafts* are what expose them to respiratory infections. Glass gets cold in the Winter so I place a heating pad near the tank or usually put them in a small ventilated tupperware container for warmth at night.

4. The ten gallon tanks are sold at all major pet stores for around $10 and they aren't that heavy. Be sure to get a secure mesh lid for about the same cost.

I had a 10 gallon glass tank for my two gerbils. On top I put this wire cage thing called the "Small animal high rise"

They loved it and provided ventilation as they would sleep on the third floor but would still use the bottom of the cage/tank. I now have that set up for my two rats except I cut a hole in the side of the high rise and tied it to their wire cage so now they have twice as much space. True, the 10 gal tank is a bit heavy but there hardly any staining like the plastic cages get on the bottom. Also, they tend to chew up the plastic cages.
