I don't believe this is porphyrin because porphyrin looks like dried blood around the eyelids of the rat. You description sounds like something different.

Sounds like this is bleeding into the eye.

As quoted by Debbie Ducommun, a rat-care specialist: "If an eye suddenly appears to be bright red, the cause is bleeding into the anterior chamber, which lies between the cornea and the iris. This is called hyphema. If the cause is an injury or infection in the eye, this may go away with treatment."

The same eye problem suddenly occured to one of my boys not two weeks ago, his eye went blood-red. Of course I rushed to check in my Rat Health Care Book and Debbie's description was to the letter. Just as in your case it healed on it's own in about a week. I believe the cause was injury.

I do not believe it is an allergy in your case, just an injury. In Albi's case, If it had been an infection, I would have used two treatments of Colloidal Silver as eyedrops. If I did not see results in that time he would go to the vet for a stronger antibiotic. My concern would be if there were complications to the eye such as bulging.
