Please help my hamsters eye is swelling up and full of gross stuff2007-11-24 22:14:14

i just picked him up on day and saw that he couldnt open one of his eyes and its been going for at least 5 days .. any idea what it is or how to help? please

Your hammy more than likely has an infection. You need to take it to the vet to be treated asap.

something is stuck or in his eye. Try washing it out with some sensitive saline solution, the kind people use to eye contacts. I would rinse for 3 days if he does not get better, take him to the vet.

how old his he? I'm sorry to tell you but when that happened to my hampster it turned out it was a tumor, and as strange as it sounds, i had to have him put to sleep. Almost all older hampsters develop tumors resulting in death. :( consult your vet asap.

There is nothing you could do or I could say that will make the hamster better on its own. A vet visit is in order.

Take it to the vet immediately! It could be something serious! You shouldn't be asking us what is wrong with him. You should ask a veternarien( or however you spell it) who went to school and learned about that stuff.

Unfortuately, you really do need to take him to a vet. I know it costs but it would be torturing him not to go. He could have conjunctivitis (pinkeye) or something in his eye, something behind his eye(such as a tumor) or it could be comething else like a cold. Only your vet can tell you. However the saline solution idea would have been something to try on the first or second day to see if it cleared up but after 5 days it is obvious that wouldn't have worked. If it is something that can be treated, the doc will most likely give you eye drops and an antibiotic. Getting him in today would be best.

Oooh, I know people already said this, but take him to the vet as fast as you can! Something very similar happened to my poor ratty boy Chip not too long ago and he had to have that eye removed. Somehow, he got it infected (either by rough and tumbling or by scratching it) and it swelled and burst. It's probably very painful for your poor hammy. The best thing you can do for him is keep him comfortable and take him to the vet.

Yes, it might just be pink eye that was happening to my cats when they were little... just very carefully try to wipe the stuff that is crusting it together that should help (do that everytime you see it crusted together.
