Please help, my rat is pregnant and i dont know what to do2007-11-24 22:14:14

I bought some rats from a breeder about 2 weeks ago and this morning when i looked at them one of them looked like shes swallowed the feed bowl, the breeder had the boys and girls all in the same cage so its possible she is pregnant.

should i seperate her from the others? do i need a special cage? and does she need dietary suppliments.

I know nothing about breeding and fear my little knowledge will kill the newborns, please any help would be greatly appreciated.

hello. I joned this site just to help you out! hahah. Well, first if she even seems the slightest bit pregnant make sure you take her out of the cage with other rats in it and put her in a seperate cage by herself. Make sure she is in a cage alone.

Next make sure she has plenty of comfortable bedding.. e.g cotton wool or tissues or even some wood shavings. She will move these around and shape these and ake them into a nest fopr her little ones to be born onto.

She does not need any different food except her usual mix and some fruit and veg.

It is best not to disrupt her or to handle her babies. Just give her food and such. Try not to change out her cage while her little ones are still small. She doesn't need a special cage but one that's not too big is always good. Her babies should be eating regular food at around 3-4weeks old. Just make sure if your cage has bars, not to have the bars too far apart as babies can escape. the babies will come out pink and small and will get fur after around 1-2 weeks. The mother rat will know what to do...she will know how to take care of them and stuff... I hope this helps you :-)

hi there ..ok slow down and breath ...ok ?right with her being so swollen i would seperate her from the other one and take her to the vet and get him/her to look at her ,he will be able to give you and idea how far she is and how she is health wise as some do need to have a bit more vitimins added ,or what ever else that you need ,have the cage close to the other one as they do like company and if they have been together from the start it would up set her ,... i hope that helps you a bit .take care xx or go onto goole and look up rat breeding and you should find info there that will ease you at present .
