Poorly mouse
I ended up looking after a mouse who had previously had a bit of a sad life, and was neglected. I took him in for a while &fell in love with him, but eventually myself had to give him up (which I didn't want to do.) My friend who then had him gave him back to me (yesterday) and I have noticed that he has got a poorly eye, which she apparantly did not notice. It's red & looks quite sore around the outside and is weeping a bit. He keeps scratching it. I am taking him to the vets tomorrow evening to hopefully get him sorted out, but my question is not about his eye at all really.
Behind his ear, he has got a sore, which he never had when I had him, & he kept itching that too. He also had a small scab on his head which he had scratched and picked off, & it starting bleeding slightly. I ended up putting sudocrem on him - a very small amount using a cotton bud, is that likely to harm him in any way? Do you think he has mites and that is why he is scratching so much? Help please x
Answers:without seeing the mouse its difficult to tell, but the usual reason for scabs on small rodents is mites, especially if he is itchy. good for you for taking him to the vets and if it is mites he will need a course of injections. (we use stuff called ivomec).
i'm not sure about the sudocrem. i've seen people use it on dogs and it hasn't harmed them so hopefully it will be ok.
the only way to know for sure whats wrong is to take him to the vet asap. even if someone who answeres ur question is a vet they havent seen the animal so they cant tell u. i hope ur mouse is ok. good luck!
vet
if it has gotten wet recently then maybe if that part didn't dry he could have a hot spot. if you can afford a high vet bill then maybe you should go, but if you cant...let nature run its course.sorry
I have 2 mice myself and it sounds like he has been in a fight with another mouse, was he the only mouse your friend had or were there others?
It's great that your taking him to the vet, many people wouldn't care so greatly for a mouse but I take my hat off to you as I think mice are lovely creatures with huge personalitys.
