Problem with gerbils
ok so i bought 2 female gerbils and they had babys. When i discovered the babys they had juust opened their eyes and have loads of fur.
my problem is i think these babys are about 24 days old, so the mum must be due for another litter? how can i tell which ones the mum and which ones the dad?? i was pretty sure i knew but now the dad looks fatter and its hard to tell which is which, i dont want to disturb them too much as thet done fine w/o me on the first litter. I just want to know how i will be able to tell when shes had babys w/o disturbing the nest and which ones mum?/
btw I know i discovered the babys late last time, but this was not due to neglect i have a very large cage and anyone who knows rotastak will know what i mean as i have 6 of the kidney beans.
thank you in advance
Answers:i can help.
usually the male is the larger of a pair.
but the definitive way to tell apart the sexes in rodents is by the distance between the urethral opening (where they pee from) and the anus (where they poop from lol).
in the male these are much more separated.
you should also be able to notice the male's huge testicles, if he's mature?
you should be aware that sometimes rodents are pregnant when you get them from the pet shop. if they were born soon after you bought them then maybe both your adult gerbils are female. if the pet shop sold you the wrong sex you should complain and if you make a fuss they will probably take the babies off your hands.
maybe u should get rid of some of ur gerbils.
