Pros, cons and info for getting a chinchilla
I want one, but I want to know about one before I get it. Where should I get it? How do I know if it is healthy and social, snd what should I look for in a chinchilla? What kind of cages and toys should they have? Also pros and cons please, and anything else you might know. Thanks so much!
Answers:Chinchillas can make excellent pets, but they are not for young children.
Pros:
Little or no smell with proper cage cleaning; fun to watch; very,, VERY long life span ,, with proper care they can live up to 20 years;
Cons:
Expenisive to purchase; cannot CANNOT get hot,, they must be a room that is 75 degrees or below; not a pet that likes to be held; they need a tall cage not a long cage (like a guinea pig); they must have timothy hay everyday to grind down their molars; proper pellets a MUST (mazuri, kline, oxbow, tradition etc);
I would highly suggest before you purchase a chinchilla going to a few websites. Don't bother buying the books out there they are full of wrong information. www.chinsnquills.com is a great forum as is chinsngliders.com .
In addition if you want to get a chin,, adopt from a local resuce. There are tons of chinchillas that need new homes! Google "chinchilla rescue" and you can find the local rescue near you.
They're pretty expensive, and very much nocturnal. You should try finding a forum.
Also use a rescue please.
pros: very huggabul,not hard 2 take care of,get along great with kids,doesnt make lot of noise
