Hi, we just got a Rat last month, and i noticed her nails were getting alittle long, what should i use to trim them?

You can get small animal trimmers from the pet store for about 6 dollars. I used to use small finger nail clippers as well when I couldn't find the pet ones, lol. They work just as well. However, sometimes these pinch the nail before cutting and you have to be extra careful.

Make sure you wrap him/her up in a towel and have some styptic powder or baking soda near by just in case you make them bleed. Just clip the very tip - if the nail is white you will be able to see the quick (where the blood is)

Also you can put down sand paper near the water bottle - this way when they go to get some water, they natually help to wear down the nails. Get the plain kind - not the kind with the sticky glue bottom.

i would go to petsmart or petco, and not try to cut them yourself because i have a dog and i tried to cut her nails and we ended up having to take her to the vet bc i accidentally cut her finger @_@

You have special scissors which you can buy at the pet store. but you should be careful when you trim them. If you cut too much off you might hit a vein in the nail itself.

well im pretty sure they sell like some type of material you can put in there cage to were off nails ...pretty much it trims while they walk ya know ... check your local pet store

i use regular toe nail trimmers on my guinea pig. it works fine, but dont cut to short or it will bleed, and hold him still no matter how much he wiggles and bites cuase you NEED to cut their nails or they will grown inward and hurt theyre paws. i hope this helps you.

You can use regular nail clippers for humans. But you're going to have to see through the nails though, if you can. You'll notice another sharp, faded pink color nail, which is actually the meat. If you cut that part-- Then well your rat would squeal in pain.
