Question bout my hammie please please help
i just bought my syrian (panda bear) hamster about almost a week ago and she eats normal and stuff but she always takes it down to her bottom level and i dont no if she eats it or not.i was petting her and i relized that she is fairly skinny and kind feel her spine.what she i do??she acts noamrl and everything and should i give her diff found because what i am feeding her now is what they were feeding her in the pet store??
Answers:Haha, do not worry. It's natural behavior. Out in the wild hamsters Will gather up all the food they can carry in their mouths and take it down to their nest to eat it there. (Due to safety precausion ;) Because if a birds spots them while eating it's food =) ) It's natural for you to feel the spine, I would start worrying when you dont.
If she takes it and hides it, she's probably saving it for later...she will have food stashed all over the cage, you'll se that on cleaning day. If she isn't lethargic or lazy, I wouldn't worry too much about her not eating. If you can feel her spine when you pet her, thats a good thing, a healthy animal will have its spine just under the skin...now if her hair starts falling off and she just lays around, thats when I'd start worrying.
Well, just so you know, hamsters aren't sopossed to be the same weight as you. And well I think that it is okay she is just getting used to her new habitat so everything is really new to her...if she starts to act weird then see a vet if not then it's not a problem...I know how you feel I got my hamster like 2 weeks ago and I was very worried and always checked and stuff. Since you just got her a week ago I wouldn't change the food because she needs to eat the food she ate at the store then after 2 weeks slowly start feeding her other stuff like carrots for snacks like once a week. Hope I helped!
What sort of food are you feeding her? Do you know for sure that she is not eating it? Have you checked the bottom of her cage for her stockpile? A common problem with small rodents and their mixed bags of food is that they will usually pick out only the foods they like (such as sunflower seeds) thus contributing to mal nutrition. One thing to try is rat blocks, it's a food for rats but in large cylinder pieces. That's what we give all our small rodents at our pet store. Are you feeding too many fruits and veggies? That could be making her also loose weight. Otherwise, if she is acting normal and not appearing sluggish and is drinking plenty of water I wouldn't worry about it.
i think that u should take her to a vet. because i have a lot of animals and they each have there own vet.
My hamster does that too! I'll feed him and he'll wake up gather it in all in cheeks and run to the under level and "hoard" it. They are just hiding it and saving it for later. If you notice, she'll eat all through out the day and night, little bits at a time.
they hide their food, it's a natural instinct, and mayge get her a bag of food so you can just fill the bowl with 2 tablespoons a day and see how much she eats or hides for later. you can buy a bag of hamster food at petsmart, petco, target for $5-6 and it lasts along time. You don't have to continue feeding what they ngot at the petstore, they do that for convenience, the blocks I mean. and fresh fruits and veggies I give once a day, like a carrot, or apple slice, or celery, whatever they like, no onions, no salt, no green leafy veggies either.
Ok I just answered your recent question- and regards to this question- I'm hoping that this is not the same hamster you are planning on taking out of its cage. If it is not doing so good- don't stress it out any more! Seriously, hamster's can die from wet tail! The diet you are feeding your hamster is good. The block diet is the best because it provides the most nutrition to your hamster. This is because the hamster can not pick and choose at what it can eat- Which another problem with hamsters is obeisity. You should definetly feed your hamster fresh vegtables, but not too much. Again too much moist vegtables can cause wet tail. Which is very bad! Don't change to seed, if you feel the need to later you have to do it gradually by mixing seed into the block. But the block diet is better. Block is also better because it provides something for your hamster to chew on. Which because they are a rodent their teeth will continuely grow. I just suggest you let your hamster get a little healthier before you start to handle it. The block diet is not for convience, it's for the health of the animals, block diet is more expensive than seed because of that.
giver her seeds with only about 2 of the forti-diet and make sure that you don't giver her too many yogurt treats she will be fine. u know when to eat and so does she make sure the food dish is always full so just in case she forgets where she puts it.
