Questions about my new pet rat What will tame my rat & whats up with him2007-11-24 22:14:21

I just bought a pet rat, and he is 8 weeks old, he seems really excited all the time, constantly having fits, where he will run around really fast in his cage & hop up to another level - Is that normal - and what does it mean ?

Also he grinds his teeth occasionally, is he okay? Nervous/Excited or what?

You have a normal healthy rat! All that zooming around is called "Popcorning". He needs a brother from his litter, or one about the same age, to rassle with eat with and curl up to sleep with.

He will be much happier and you will see why it's called popcorning! He really does need company and they will both love you. They are little love generating, fun loving critters.

The teeth grinding is "bruxing" and they do it when they are happy! So you must be doing a good job!

ConRATulations on your new pet, and get him a pal tomorrow. You will be glad you did.

Is he alone?

If so he's probably looking for his brothers and sisters.

He's also probably just marking his territory and getting use to his new surroundings.

If he has a lot of energy a (safe) wheel will help burn it off.

As for the teeth grinding you are going to need to get him a wooden chewing block as his teeth are probably getting too long.

The grinding Either means he's excited or he is nervous Grinding their teeth is called bruxing my rats do it all the tie when they are out after or when we pet them. Try taking him and putting him on the couch or something but make sure to put a towel down in case he pees. i think he just wants to come out and play
