Rabbit hutch
I'm thinking oif getting rabbits and was planning to get a metal one but I was told it could heat up in Summer which is really hot here in Australia so I was advised to get a wooden one but appently rabbits can chew any ledges that stick out. I read in a book that any ledges sticking out should be lined for insulation and to stop the gnawing but it didn't say what to line it with. What would I line it with and how would I go about it?
Answers:You definitely don't want to get a metal one--good call!
Actually wooden ones should be just fine. Just be sure that it isn't painted, because that can poison the rabbit. Keep an eye out for chewing, but it would take FOREVER for the rabbit to chew through it. You could also just make sure the chicken wire that would line the cage (so the rabbit would have air and see out) could also cover most of the wood.
I would say the wooden hutch will be fine, but if you build it put the side wire inside the posts. A rabbit will eat the posts and it doesn't take all that long - they do that to work down and sharpen their teeth!
You can use wire on the sides with openings no larger than 1"X2", and the floor can be wire as long as you use larger diameter wire! Small diameter wire will cause problems with their feet!
To help with their teeth and slow down chewing on unwanted items, put a small block of untreated wood in the cage, most rabbits will chew it if they aren't given access to the posts!
Good Luck!
i hade a two story wooden one for both of my rabits. only one chewed but not that much and it was good for his teeth.
