First off, if you dont have the money to take care of an animal to afford the simpiest of neccesities you should give it back. If this isnt a money issue then you should do more research on rats before you go and get one. Any person that buys a rat should know the basics about them, like what they can and cant eat. Rats eat fruits, veggies, grains, seeds, just about everything you can think of. Things that they shouldnt eat are sugar, chocolate, salt, lettuce, or dariy. I suggest you do alot more research on this animal and think twice about keeping it
They need carbohydrate, and the best way to get that into them is in seeds. I think any kind of seed that isn't poisonous to humans is fine for rodents. You should also give them fresh fruit and vegetables every now and then.
Rats eat practically anything with a few exceptions. I'm not saying that you should give them ANYthing though. My rats really enjoy cereals and bread. Sometimes I give them fruits and vegetables too. (mine have rat food in addition to this)
