If your mom won't buy food for them, (which is really wrong) you should at least get them some kind of rodent vitamin.

Do you get any kind of allowance? Maybe next time you go to the store, buy the pet food yourself. What I don't understand is, why would she let you have the rat if she wasn't going to buy food for him? Good Luck, hope you can solve your problem.

A healthy diet for people is a healthy diet for rats.

That being said. Talk to your mom about doing extra chores for money so you can buy your own rat food. It's your pet, step up to the plate.

EDIT:

And Kati33 is absolutely right. Before you get a pet in the future, make sure you know how to take care of it and have the resources.

Rats don't need seeds or huge amounts of carbs. They are omnivores like people and need a good balanced diet. Check out http://www.ratsrule.com/diet.html... for a diet you can make at home. It is important to use a good quality dog food or rodent block along with the grain mix. Avoid store made seed mixes/rodent diets as they tend to be inadequte nutritionally. You can also add fresh veggies and some fruits to your rat's daily diet.

I would suggest you do some more research on rats- the rats rule website is a good start. And if your mom refuses to help take care of your pets, you need to consider rehoming them.

try cheerios, or pretzels, rats are scavangers, thats why on movies you see them eatin all sorts of things, dont give it meats, bad idea, he will start to bite u for you are meat, try grain foods like cereals, and i think your mom wont buy it cause she doesnt want a rat in the house so try and keep feeding him your brekfast a secret. make sure he has lots of water while your figuring things for him to eat, some like cheese, cottage cheese, lettuse , salad mix, just find out what its tastes are . try different foods, or get on the web and look up rat homemade food or homemade pet foods, under rodents.
Try some chereo's, oat meal (uncooked), whole oats, peices of banana chips (small peices), apples, tomato's (not to much because of the acids and they have such little boddies), grapes (most rats don't like raisins), like make a fruit saled and then make a dry mix you can also search google for homemade rat food mixtures. besides most of the rat food from the stores are not good for them.
