Good luck! Aubrey
After trying various shop bought ready-mixes of different rat food brands, and having to throw elements of each mix away all the time, we decided to create our own mix based on Suebee's world famous rat diet mix. Though our rats go through phases with the various ingredients, sometimes choosing to leave one particular ingredient to the last, sometimes another, the ability to vary the mix has been invaluable in giving the rats a varied and nutritious daily diet. So, here it is:
3/4lb jumbo organic oats
1/2lb flaked barley
1/2 standard box puffed wheat (no added sugar or salt- Quaker, most stores' own brand, including Tesco's)
1/2 standard box puffed rice (we've found that stores' own brand varieties usually contain no sugar and less salt than, say, Kellog's Rice Crispies)
2oz pumpkin seeds
2oz sunflower seeds, shelled or unshelled (we feed human grade seeds, not bird grade)
1lb tricolour pasta twists
4oz dried fruit (usually 2oz of one and 2oz of another, such as dried cranberries, dried blueberries, apple slices, sultanas etc. Dried banana can also be fed but is higher in fat and can cause constipation if eaten in large quantities)
4oz Japanese rice crackers, peanuts removed
4oz malted mini shredded wheat (again, we've found shops' own brands to be lower in sugar than the big name brands)
