Rat and gerbils as cage mates

Rat and gerbils as cage mates2007-11-24 22:14:44

We had 2 rats and 2 gerbils in separate cages. They are all nice friendly little guys. During play time the rats have visited the gerbils through the bars. The rats have never been aggressive but the gerbils have been curious and excited about the rats. Sadly, one of our rats has died (she was over 3) We do not plan on replacing her. Have rats and gerbils ever been able to share a cage? I know they are natural prey and predator. Our surviving rat is the same age as our gerbils, less than 2. They seem to get along through the bars.

Answers:

please do not put them together those rats would kill those gerbils in a heartbeat . not a good idea at all . good luck and just let them be friends through the bars good luck .

I feel that this would NOT be a good idea because that yes,in the wild they hate each other and now the may even be aggressive to each other, but in a way that looks nice.

Hope this helps!

I dont think you should try it because if you were going to do that you would have to did that when you first got them.
nooooo bcaz they willll dfently fight and onlii one will live trust me!
i wouldn't... because rodents that are diffrent usually end up fighting. and if you put a rat against a gerble the rat will win. but yea dont put 'em togeather
Definately not, they require different food pellets, different health conditions, its not a good idea,
any smaller rodent that enters the cage is considered a prey animal and will probably be swiftly killed. there was a story on one of the rat groups that i belong to about the rat killing and eating a mouse.
