Rat bedding
Is there any other kind of bedding I can use for my rats where they won't start stinking so fast. I just changed their cage 2 days ago and they're already stinking. I am currently using that Carefresh pet bedding but it don't soak up the odors very well. I've heard that pine and cedar bedding is bad for rats and/or they are allergic to it or something. Is there any other kind of bedding I can use that would help with the smell?
Answers:If the cage smells bad to you, think about how it must smell to them. Their sense of smell is far superior to ours.
I've tried all the different litters except pine or cedar, and none work that well at odor control.
Right now my favorite is Life Mate Hemp Bedding. It is practically dust free and doesn't stick to their hammocks and other cloth things the way aspen shavings do.
They should have their cage cleaned every 3rd day or sooner. I doubt they enjoy walking around in their own poop.
I have one buck who lives alone and he is the only one potty trained. The does aren't, and the other boys like to marinate in their hammocks. I usually change their hammocks every day.
you can use that recycled news cat litter- it isnt clay like most cat litters. but yes the cedar and pine can give them respritory infections. i personally use the carefresh, but i put paper towels down on the cage floor first and that helps soak up the urine and they will shred it too for bedding.
