Rat lab blocks, where to get soy based2007-11-24 22:14:25

I have been trying to find soy based lab blocks for rats, as i heard they are much better for them than the corn based ones...but i cant seem to find them...if you buy them where do you get them from?

Most of the better lab blocks are made with a soy or wheat base ... some of the more prominent manufacturers are:

Purina (or PMI) - LabDiet / Mazuri Diet (soy/corn/wheat etc.)

Harlan Sprague Dawley, Inc. (HSD) - Harlan Teklad, etc. ... also note that HSD is a specialty breeder of labratory rats. (wheat/corn/soy/etc.)

Hagen - Nutriblock (corn/wheat base)

Most commercial lab blocks will be fine for pet rats. My personal preference is the Harlan Teklad 2018 as I feel it best suits the needs of my pet rats.

I don't know if it's soy based, but Regal Rat is a corn free food. I've used it before...my rats preferred a seed mix diet, but got used to it and did well on it. It's not a block though, it's thin and round. You can order it online or some pet shops will special order it for you.

The best nutrition for rats is in the form of a Lab Block. It has all of the daily requirements a rat needs. Some of the best brands are listed below. Be sure to choose a block that does not have corn as its first ingredient; soy- or wheat-based blocks are preferred. I have been using Owxbow's Rodent Maintenance Formula lately, which seems to go over very well -- much better than most lab blocks. It contains no corn, and has the same protein content of Nutro Natural Choice Lite.
