Rat's need a secure covered private sleeping box. Provide one, even if they seem not to use it they need a bolt hole, thay are after all, prey animals and will get stressed if they can not hide sometimes.

Red discharge from the nose is pigment, not blood, stressed or unwell rats produce this, it's an easy pointer than something is wrong.

Rats CHEW ! Give them bones, bonio dog biscuits, wood. if they cant chew, thier teeth grow too long and they can not eat.

I TOTALLY recomend rats as a pet !

They are very intelligent and very cute. I had two (it's better to get a couple as they keep each other company, same sex though!) called Fizzy & Pop and they were soooo lovely. They were high maintenance though (but I spoil my animals). I spent around 拢100 a month on them; new bedding, complete food, fresh food like lettuce, tomatoes carrots etc and pasta (from marks!), litter (I had a massive cage, and the bottom came out so you could put litter in there, but they didn't walk in it) and I bought them treats and new toys as they had a habit of chewing everything. A negative is that they are prone to tumours. Pop had 3 operations to remove them and eventually I had to put them to sleep after 3 years, wih Pop having 5 tumours growing and Fizzy had two. It was very sad and I miss them a lot. I may have rats again in the future I hope. Fantastic little pets with enormous personality.

Tip: If you decide to let them have a run around the room like I did quite frequently, I suggest you put away anything you want to keep. I lost my prom dress, curtains, books, teddies, my gameboy and found nibbled cables and television remotes. Good luck!

they are very intelligent excellent with children and mine is a real pleasure but they can smell quite strongly so have to be cleaned very regularly
