What is the largest size/ type of rat that one can buy or adopt? I know they come in small, medium, and large, but what is the biggest?
Answers:When you see signs that say "Small, Medium, and Large" it is not usually about breed. It is about the age of the rats (bigger is older).
Unfortunately, most rats are not sold as pets. They are sold as food to snakes and such. The snake owners need a certain maximum size of rat for their pets, so the pet stores sort them that way.
If you want to keep your pet for 2-3 years(their lifespan), buy a small one.
I am not sure of breeding but I don know that the males tend to be larger.
I know that Japanese hooded rats can get really big. I Had one named Ollie and he was huge! I also have another one now thats small (but he's just a baby), his name is Elijah.

they get pretty big they get full grown at one year old so it is pretty hard to tell i just got mine and my brother at the end of April and they grew a little they are still little and they are medium.
Lol... all domestic rats are european and they are all very similar in size considering they are the same species. If you want a big rat, feed you rat well. I have 3, my largest is Bowzer and he is around 2 lbs. What a lot of people don't know is that rats should be given veggies and meat. Chicken bones work well for keeping their teeth from overgrowing. I give mine yogert, pudding, cookies, and all sorts of leftovers. I ran across a study years ago that discovered that caffene prevents cancer and tumors in rats (which is a leading cause of death in rodents) so give them cappichino (sp.) and chocolate. My rats have NEVER had tumors and I believe it is due to the fact that I have always given them a lot of caffine. They do make wonderful pets, I would recommend getting a 'crawler, or hopper' they are around 3 weeks old and are usually bought as feeders (poor babes) and at this age they will bond well with you. Make sure go get 2, of the same sex, and feed them lots of fatty meats, chicken skin, high calorie foods so they will take off well. Rat feed simply lacks the nutrition they need. Speghetti, fish, shrimp, sourcream baked potato mash, corn on the cob (cooked with butter and salt of course), cake, cookies, ice cream, lasagna, ect... are all good foods for rodents. I also buy them stouffers and marie callendars microwave meals.
there are these rats in Australia that are as big as small dogs. it broke into this guy's fridge! he duck taped it closed so it could not escape!
