Answers:Our first 2 rats came from a pet store and the female (8-10 weeks) was $3.50 and the male (12-14 weeks) was $4.50. They were grouped by age and sexes were mixed. Our next 4 were rescued all from the same place and they were feared by the people to the point my 17 yr old girl had to pick them out of the cages. I would recommend getting ones that are 8-10 weeks old just so you will have more time with them. Now ones of this age do tend to be a bit wild and chew on a lot of things (like the cage plastic). Also check the bar spacing if using a cage with wire since a young one can squeeze through anything larger then that. We use 3/4" spacing for our 7-8 month old male rat (our first) and he's made no attempt to try and escape. He's about 19" from nose to tip of tail and still growing. He was 16" a month ago. The female is still to small for 3/4" spacing (she got out) at 15" long. I buying large bird cages with 7/16" spacing which is perfect for all our rats with bar spacing. We try not to house more then 3 rats in a cage together, unless one chews out of their cage. As adults get the largest cage possible with the smallest bar spacing, I'd look for ones with 3/4" or less.
