As for which is better, PetCo or PetSmart...

PetSmart usually has a better selesction of rats, and they tend to know more about them...but it depends on where you live...PetCo just carries rats and separates them by size, most of the time, they only have black hooded rats...which are usually around $10...

PetSmart carries...

Fancy(hooded) in varyious colors...$7

Rex...$8

Blue...$8

Dumbo...$9

and Hairless...$10

You may end up paying a little more at PetSmart but you'll have plently to coose from...

I do have to disagree with one thing...someone said to use carefresh.PLEASE DONT!! Carefresh has given more rats respiratory infections than anything else...it's very dusty, expensive and it smells bad(with out the rats using it first)...it's a very bad bedding...Please use aspen or litter train your rats and use cloth on the cage floors...

Hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!

I would NOT get them from Petco. The last rat I got from there was supposed to be male but turned out to be female and I ended up with 16 rats in the end. They breed rats without discretion and you end up with sickly, mean rats. But most rats are very smart friendly animals that bond with their owners just like dogs.
