Take it to the vet and they should be able to clip the nails down for you. Don't try it yourself or you may amputate a toe or two!
my rat has the same problem. Take it to the vets. They will clip them to an appropriate length!

I agree with lillylee i would take him to the vet to get them clipped... my stepsister has a rat and i do research on the Internet about them.
easiest thing u could do it, put in a couple bars like the un-even bars they have in the gymnastics shows but go to the bird store and ask if they have and bird post nail files i used to get them when i had budgees its very fine sand paper on a tube u slip around the post so when the bird lands on it and moves his feet around it slowly but eventually takes the point off the toe nails..cheap too.!!
I use sandpapered bird perches and regularly clip my rats nails. It's not that hard to do if you can get your rat to hold still for a few minutes. Use a pair of human nail clippers and just cut the CLEAR tip. Do not cut too far. You should be able to see the quick (pink area). If they have dark nails it will be harder and you might want to take them to a vet to have it done. If you do accidentally cut into the quick, there is septic powder available (Bamboo brand) and I would recommend having that available just in case. Remember that rats have no "thumb" nail. 4 on the front paws and 5 on the back.
two words lol NAIL CLIPPERS ;-) they will be ok after that i clip my 5 rats nails when there like that they may squeak only because its new but keep doing it everytime they grow and he she will get used to it dont take too much off just the point its like humans really go to close to the pink and it hurts like crazy am i right lol so just the tip wud do for now
you don't have to take your rat to the vet to have his nails clipped, you can do it!
