Rats and tumors2007-11-24 22:14:47

my rat is about three years old. it all started when we get back from our family trip to delaware. i took her out of her cage and just walked around with her for a bit and then i noticed a small bump behing her arm. are last rat had gotten a tumor so i know that it is very common on rats. i am so glad that this one has gone through such a long time period without having one. is there any suggestions on how i can help her through it and any special diets i can put her on just to keep her happy for the rest of her days. she has had it for about 4 weeks now.

Answers:

yes, i have recently lost PAtches, my baby rat, to tumors. we had had a previous surgery to remove one, and it was successful, and she lived another 6 months, but then regrew one and died.

you have quite a few options, but they depend on the tumor size; if it is fast growing or not.

1. surgery-

if you can find a vet that can and has treated rats, it is costly but rats come out of the surgery VERY well.

2. no surgery-

the tumor will, if it is fast growing, get larger and larger until the rat cant get enough blood flow to it and the rest of its body, and will die. if you choose this option, the only thing you can do is comfort your rat, and treat her well until it is time to put her down when she isnt enjoying life anymore.

good luck with your girl!

You can speak to your vet about surgery, which will extend her life. Operate while it's small, so it's less costly and the surgery will be easier on the rat. Females are far more prone to tumors than males. If you prefer not to deal with tumors, consider adopting a couple of males next time. (rats are always happier with a rat buddy!!)
