Rats can be litter box trained

Rats can be litter box trained2007-11-24 22:14:48

The only thing holding me back from bringing a couple home is their bathrooming habbits. I don't like the idea of them randomly pooping and peeing everywhere. :) Not that its their fault!!

I think I remember someone saying they are potty trainable. Are they? How did you do it?

Answers:

they are able to be litter trained but it does take some time and effort on your part. boys are easier to train than girls are apparently. you stick them in the litter box and show that they use it for that purpose. every time they go outside of it pick up the bedding and pellets and put it in there as well as placing them in there.NEVER use kitty litter. if they swallow it it will cause sever dehydration and other problems.

Yes rats can be litter trained. You use the same litter as kitty litter. Keep them confined till they urinate in the litter then they will automatically go back to the same spot. Do NOT move the litter box as they are creatures of habit as are cats! I have had rats for years and they make awesome pets.
i use aspen wood chips in my "potty" for my girls. if you buy rats from a breeder they are usually already litter trained.

the key to litter training is to find what corner of the cage there already using. place there "litter pan" in that same corner of the cage. your not going to like this part... take the bedding that's got some pee on it and put it in the litter tray along with their "raisins" (rat poop) so that it smells like a bathroom to them. the idea is not to use the same bedding through out the cage so they don't get confused.

when you clean there bathroom area its a good idea not to clean it too good... they need to associate the smell so they continue to use it.

i've given you some links so that you can do your own research on the subject.
