Really hyper guinea pig2007-11-24 22:14:51

Piggy, my guinea pig, is REALLY hyper. Sometimes he runs laps around his cage and everyonce in a while he'll take a little drink and do more. Also, everytime i come into the room he starts squeaking and climbs up the walls of the cage.

Do your guinea pigs have any similar problems?

I wouldn't call this a "problem" unless you don't like your piggie! :-)

Your piggie laps around the cage are called "zoomies". My pigs get a case of the zoomies first thing in the morning. I think its hilarious to watch them zip around the cage like that! They're just burning off energy.

Your piggie is just happy to see you---go over & pick him up or give him a treat!

Enjoy their exuberance! I wish I could start off MY day doing the zoomies, but I do real good to make it to the coffee pot!

I used to have guinea pigs (can't wait to own them again), but they would exhibit some of the "hyper" activity you're describing . . . it was usually in the morning. They're very playful/happy animals - maybe you take him out of his cage and let him run around to get rid of some of that excess energy.

Also, if you're his main food source, he may be happy to see you because he thinks he's going to get fed. I know, that sounds mean, but as an owner of four cats, I know that pets (specifically cats) will use you to get what they want/need.

mine did this when i 1st got em..r u feedin him enuff.cause tht is when mine does it now...does he get enuff vitamin c durin the day.cause if u kno or now..he can't make his own vitamin c like we can...or like rabbits and hampsters and dogs and cats can...tht y it is important u feed him the right vegatables everyday..i give coco vegatables right b4 i go 2 bed..and coco never lets me 4get 2 feed em...but everyonce in awhile mine will run around.so i don't think it is a problem.

Dont worry, the squeaking means they are excited/happy. My guinne pig did the same thing when he was younger. Eventually he got old and all he wants to do is eat oranges and celery haha. If he likes running, you should try getting him a plastic ball and let him run around your room, they like exploring, so its a good idea. Good luck!
