Red and black eyed hamsters
Is there a difference between red and black eyed hamsters beside eye color? Why do hamster in the same litter look so different?
I have a red eyed hamster. He sometimes looks evil, but hes sooo! cute.
Answers:ok, my friend and i have been breeding hamsters for quite a while and this is what i can tell you. Usually, the black eyed gene is paired with the darker fur colored gene. Say, if the hamster is white but it has large dark spots its eyes will be black. we have only ever gotten one ecception. The red eyed gene is paired with the light colored fur. Say the hamster is very light brown it will have red eyes most of the time. If the brown is darker though it could have either.
Red eyes is NOT the sign of an albino. an animal can have red eyes but not be albino. when a hamster is newly born, its skin will look almost transparent compared to the others in the litter because of absence of pigment. then, it will grow a very fine fur that stays absolutely white and has not even a hint of another color on it. when it matures its skin is lighter pink than the rest of the litter, and it will have bright red eyes(brighter than normal), and shockingly white fur.
as far as temper goes, there is really no difference between the two. people just labled the red ones evil because they look the part so well.
Hope this helps.
There is no real difference because of the eye color. I have a red eyed guinea pig and a black eyed guinea pig the only thing different is their personality's
Is he white furred? Often times red eyes come with albino animals. My rabbit years was white as could be with red eyes--not coincidentally, she was albino. A black furred and black eyed hamster obviously wouldn't be albino. You're red eyed hamster might be.
usually red-eyed animals are albino. if he has white fur, then he's albino. its a genetic thing. there's nothing to worry about, its like some rabbits are albino and have white fur and red eyes. it just looks different. they're perfectly healthy!
Not really. I had plenty of rodents with red eyes, and some with black eyes, there's no difference. The red is just a genetic trait, it doesn't affect their eyesight or anything. And don't worry, you're little one isn't evil, either lol. Enjoy your awesome hamster!
