Regular hamster or a russian hamster2007-11-24 22:14:52

I have two guinea pigs for years and now I'm for some change. I saw a russian hamster in a pet shop and its soooo beautiful, but i heard that they can be mean, not really nice. so should I got a russian or a regular hamster? what would be better?

Well I used to have a hamster (regular) and she never bit me once (that was when i was 5) and you know how little kids pick hamsters up by their tails and stuff? well i did all that and she never bit me. But my cousin had a russian hamster, and you couldn't open up its cage unless you had socks over your hands (like gloves) because it would immediately start trying to gnaw your fingers off. As you can tell, there's a big difference. But it may not be quite that severe depending on the actual individual hamster. Maybe you could ask the pet store if you could pet or hold the russian before you buy it, then you could find out for yourself.

From past experience, russians get pretty jumpy, and bite more than regular ones!

Regular hamster-I had two russian hamsters and they were nice but there pouches on there face became rotten and fell off, it was gross. We took them to the vet and they had food the went bad in their cheeks causing this to happen.

Regular hamster are bigger and calmer so they just make better pets.

Did anyone ever bother to ask the hamster? not all hamsters are mean. most of them are just so because the breeders dont handle them from birth. i kknow, because my friend and i have bred russians for a while now, and we have only had a vary few actually turn out demonic. the animal's disposition largly depends on the animal's personality, and what work was done with it when it was little. large breeders that breed hamsters just to stock the pet stores dont have time to spend handling hundreds and hundreds of hamsters daily. however, some hamsters are nice even when they were never handled. you just have to find the right hamster.
