Roborovski dwarf hamsters are they a good pet2007-11-24 22:14:54

So i was looking for something that would bring me some spunk back into my life during the summer holidays, and i went to the pet store and found roborovski dwarf hamster. i thought it was adorable and rushed back home to research on it. so far i like wat i've read. all i want is something to keep in my room thats alive and is fun to watch. I've already got 3 chinchillas in a seperate room. so i will have other things to look after but still. If i keep one in my room, or two in my old fish tank will they make noise at night since they're nocturnal? Over all my main question is are they fun to observe (i think i will make a project of them by observing and writing down my data too!) and what are some other things i should know? I've had at least 8 hamsters in the past that all lived long and they were teddy bear hamsters so this will be different. ok ill shut up now!

Yes, they will make good pets if you don;t want to hold them. They are extremely fast and impossible to hold. I know this because I have one. A fish tank is the best cage for it because they can squeeze through wire ones! I wouldn't put it in my room though. They LOVE the wheel and the wheel makes squeaky noises. They live longer than Syrians and dwarves cause of their temperament. You should provide lots of toys too so they don't get bored. Good luck with your Robos!

They are really hard to hold & asleep most of the day - they will make noise all night..
If you really want something that is interesting to watch and play with, you should not go with the hamster. You should get mice. They are Hilarious to watch!! And they would make a great study animal. So, anyway, why don't you play with your chinchillas more often? I love the little critters. They are so sweet!! I am sure that you do give them attention, but really jump into them and give them hours and hours of attention daily. It will give you lots of attatchment and real sense of purpose in the chinchillas' life.
I have two dwarf hamsters. And to be honest with you, they sleep all day and tend to bite more then the teddy bears, syrians, and other hamsters. But, I say that if you have the time to really socialize a dwarf hamster, and you don't mind one sleeping and biteing, then, you should go for one. But, if not, then I would recommend a syrian for you! They are usually awake more during the day, and tend not to bite that much. I know, I am kind of not helping you, but, this is the truth. Thanks, and good luck,

no if i were you i would not get a hamster of any kind they are boring and you can not play with them outside of the cage they will run away they make noise in the night and will keep you awake for hours i would get a ferret even though they smell you can get rid of it easly they can play around with you they are so cute and sleep most of the time but love to playy and will have a strong bond
They are fun to observe, but dwarf hamsters especially dwarf females tend to bite more, so if you just are going to be observing mainly and not handling sure they are a great pet, make sure to get a wheel. Hope my info helps.
