Scratchy Rat2007-11-24 22:14:57

My rat is a female and she scratches herself all the time, mostly around her ribs and behind ears. None of my other rats scratch as much as her. I ruled out scratching from to much protein so I dont know what eles to do. If it was lice/mites wouldint my other rats have it? It could be dry skin. idk if it is dryskin what could I do to get rid of it? I dont want to take her to the vet if all I have to do if bath her is mayonase, but i will if its extremely important. please help, thanks.

I had this same problem. First make sure the other rats aren't over grooming her, or drawing blood. Second, if that's ok, try giving her a small piece of toast with Olive Oil on it. Or a very small piece of Avocado. Try that for a few days and see if that helps. If she is still scratching, and you DO NOT have her on a bedding like pine, or cedar, or even aspen, take her to the vet.

My rat was actually allergic to the bedding. We had to buy the white Carefresh for her and her cage, which was UBER expensive!

Look for dead skin in her fur by the scratching spots.
i'd go to the vet and have her checked for mites. she may also have a skin condition that needs to be treated.
she probably has mites or the bedding is irritating her skin you might want to check the bedding online to see if anybody else using that brand had the same thing happen
