i didnt know much about hamsters when i first baught mine. i have 2 syrian hamsters. male and female. i kept them together and theyve been living together since they were very young and seem to be v attached to one another.. esp the male. after research it seems they should be living alone :S the female is now unsurprisingly pregnant so ill have to separate them anyway.. but is it true that they could never live in pairs? they never fight and seem very close.

Answers:

Syrians should never be kept together even with breeding pairs. Rarely some may get along, but you've done the right thing to separate them. The male male will eat the babies. But in some cases the female may eat them too if she's overwhelmed by too many or is disturbed within the first 2 weeks. Don't change the litter until the eyes are open, so make sure and change it before they're born. She will have them in 15-17 days from conception. She can have up to 20 babies, but 8 is an average litter for most. By 3-4 weeks they will wean and will need to be separated by sexes, but don't put the males in with dad, he'll kill them. You'll need to have 2 other cages for the males and females. They can go to new homes or the pet store at 6-8 weeks old, even though pet store will take them at 4 weeks, but this is unsafe and too young resulting in many people who are inexperienced with hamsters not knowing how to care for them and them dieing soon after getting them.
