Sex of my hammies
Month ago I bought two dwarf hamsters in a pet shop. The staff in doesn`t seem like they know a lot about these little animals. I wanted two females, because the staff made me sure two females will not fight. But now I`m really not sure about their sex, because they fight time to time, but also one of them climb on the back of the other one and it seems they are having sex...
Answers:My sister works at a pet store, and it is very hard to tell the gender of dwarf hamsters. So, the pet store really didn't know. And my sister got two dwarf hamsters, both she thought were boys. But one happened to be a girl. She just keeps them in small separate cages, but unlike Syrian hamsters, the dwarf hamsters usually are more friendly and compatable. Dwarf hamsters can live together. Syrian hamsters cannot. You will just have to keep an eye on them so you won't get any more dwarf hamsters, and unable to tell the gender.
Maybe a vet would be able to tell the difference, but people working in pet stores do not have the training of a vet.
The signs they are showing are probably the signs of mating. Since you said the people you bought your hampster from weren't entirely sure of the hampsters' genders, go to a veterinarian. (There are usually some indicators from the back of the hampster.)
You should be expecting some little hammy babies soon!
Even if they were two females, you can't keep two females, they will fight, only two males or a male and a female.
You cannot tell the difference between male and female until the male genitalia begin to develop, and you will be able to tell just by looking at them. I would seperate them unless you want a whole lot more.
