Shoebox/ Tissue box tunnels
Would it be safe to make a tunnel for my guinea pig out of a shoebox or tissue box? Do you have any other tips??
Answers:Tissue and shoeboxes are fine for guinea pigs. Most likely they'll hide in them, chew on them, etc., and you'll want to replace them when they start getting "worn." The cardboard won't hurt them, though it shouldn't be a staple in their diet.
You can also use paper bags, toilet paper rolls stuffed with hay (as a toy)...my pigs have PVC connectors as tunnels/hiding places, which you can find at any hardware store for under $10. You'll want to be sure you get a big enough one - I think ours has a 4 inch diameter. Pig igloos, or "pigloos" are popular with mine, too. As far as toys go, they love lots of hay. I found balls made with woven hay that have a bell inside - they'll push it around to chew on it and the bell will jingle. They also have several chew sticks (branches).
It should be safe if the tunnels aren't far off the ground, where the guinea pig can fall out and injure itself.
The guinea pig might be more interested in chewing on the cardboard boxes rather than traveling through them, though.
If you're really intent on doing this, try incorporating oatmeal canisters with both ends removed. They're more tunnel-like than tissue boxes.
Use duct tape for secure connections between pieces.
a tunnel out of shoe box or tissue box is not advisable for guinea pigs. they may just end up biting it or worst feeding from it... and these materials can be easily destroyed specially by water...
