Should I brush my long haired hamster2007-11-24 22:15:20

My long haired teddy bear hamster has really obnoxiously long hair. Can I brush him? What type of brush should I use?

Answers:

YES! You should! If you don't then it can get VERY matted! Plus, it's not healthy for your hamster to have long hair that is matted! I would use a non-used toothbrush for your hamster's head, and then a little Barbie brush for the long hair. The Barbie brush might need to bought, or you might be able to find one on Ebay, or at Goodwill or something like that!

I hope that this helps answer your question(s)! thanks, and GOOD LUCK!

Hamsters are good at grooming themselves.. and each other. If you see tho that there are Mats then I would just use a small soft bristled dog brush. Or using a toothbrush would be OK too.
Well now I have finally talked to the queen..and as far as you hamster goes the answer is yes.the hair on the little baby will become all matted and this will cause it yo start smelling.Good luck and while I am at it are you ever going to make a trip to Texas...Queen...LOL
Yes, you should... (thanks)
If things are stuck in the hair then get a clean toothbrush and gently brush him softly. But you really don't need to!
i had a hamster that had really long hair too. i didnt brush him but i used a comb. i used one of those black combs that have wider spaced bristles on one side and then the bristles gradually get closer together so on the other side, the bristles had a thin space between them. at first i just combed him with the wider spaced side a couple times a day. as is fur got better i would slowly switch the sides i was combing him with. eventually his fur should get smooth enough to use the thin side. im sure you can buy this comb at a drugstore since they are very commonly used in salons and such. i hope this makes your hamster look better!
Yes, long haired guinea pigs do need to get brushed since they have alot of hair(like girls)and if u dont brush it it will get tangled.THe brushes u should use is kind like the one dog owners use but mabbe smaller. He He
Yes. You should brush your hamster. Even though I keep guinea pigs, one of them has sort of long hair and I brush it every 2 days.

To brush her, I use an old barbie brush that I found in a draw.

You will need to brush them even though they may clean themselves. Watch that their hair doesn't get matted.

Good luck!

yes and you can trim it if it gets too long, use a small wide tooth brush.
yes cuz if yooh dont tiny microscopic bugs will get into the hairs and infect or irritate ur hamster. you shoud use the special thin or thick stranded comb.
