Should I clean my hamsters cage because of it2007-11-24 22:15:21

About an hour ago, I had my black Syrian hamster, Angel, out of his cage. I was hand training him by sitting in the bath tub with him. After 15 minutes, I put him back into the cup I had brought him there with and went back to my room where his cage was. There, I found that I had left his cage's door open and my brown tabby, Diamond, had climbed inside! The cage is considerably small, so I was very surprised she got in. My mom got her out by taking the cage off of the base. I put Angel back in the cage. I'm wondering, though, because of the cat being in there, should I clean the cage? I don't know if anything harmful can come of it if I don't. I know the cat doesn't have fleas or anything . . .

I would be more worried about the cat getting to the cage the next time with the hamster in it. I would make sure it was in a safe place. Better safe than sorry. My cat ate one of ours. Evita

Other than giving your little friend some new smells , it should be fine. If your cat is healthy and flea free, everyone should do okay. Sounds like your cat might be a little jealous.

it should be ok, but, hey, it never hurts to go ahead and give the cage another good cleaning, just to be safe. especially if it is close to cleaning time anyway

You should DEFINITELY clean the cage. Angel will notice that there is another animal's scent in the cage and will make her feel like her "personal property" was "invaded." You should clean it to get rid of the smell, but don't spray it with air freshener because that has harmful chemicals that are not good for animals. And the smells will confuse the hamster.
