Should I cover my mommy and babies cage
One of my two hamsters had 3 babies the day after I brought them home from the pet store!! I have never had hamsters before (just gerbils) and I read things on the internet and they are doing fine, I think...a lot of people think that I should cover their cage. Should I? I already removed the other hamster.another thing is that the mom made her nest outside of the woodhut when they were born, 5 days ago. She moved the nest into the woodhut today..is she scared? What are the chances of the babies survival? HELP!!!

She's not scared...it's their nature to move the babies after a day or two.
The babies will be fine, mostly because mom knows what to do, and you thought to remove the other hamster, which was quick thinking.

Cover the cage, but make sure there is still ventilation. Mama rodents will move the nest a lot, I think it's just instinctual. She needs her privacy though, because if she gets stressed, she's likely to kill the babies. As long as Mama is happy and healthy, the babies should be fine. Just give them space and give Mama lots of food and water.
I don't think you need to cover their cage, because if I was a mother, I would want to see what was going on around me. I think it is ok if she moves, she might feel safer. Also, if you cover the cage, it might cut off ventilation, so I reccomend you don't.

mine had babies before,too. she probably moved into the hut for her babies protection, she probably doesnt know shes in a cage.i dont think you need to cover the cage. i think the babies will be fine.
best thing to do is leave it alone!!!!!!!! the fact the mom was so stressed she already moved the babies is bad, u do anything else and she thinks they are in danger she might kill them. it is kind of unusal for hamsters to only have 3 babies. in hamsterbooks it is recommended tht u not clean the cage and only go near it to feed the mom and give freshwater, other than that stay away from it til u see the babies moving around outside of the nest
