Should I get a second gerbil2007-11-24 22:15:00

I had two gerbils, they were from the same litter. They were both three years old and recently one has died. The one left is very lonely without her mate, and I don't know what to do. I'm considering getting another gerbil friend for her, but is she too old? I don't know if she would bond with it. Any advice?

yes you should get another gerbil. when you et it, split the cage in half with see through plastic rap or something stronger.put one gerbil on one side and the new gerbil on the other.see what they do. if they stand on there hind legs with there backs against each othwer and they are leaning on each other even though there is plastic wrap in the way then they will fite. if they dont for three days, they probably will get along.

With gerbils, if you want to keep more than one together, they have to be introduced when they are VERY young, if your gerbil is alread 3 years old...she is not going to tolerate a new cage mate...

Yes she may be lonely and miss her old cage mate, but she still will not tolerate a new one, you are just going to have to spend a little more time with her to help her out...

I would pair her up with a male. Gerbils only produce babies up until two years, maybe 2 1/2 at most. The still mate but no babies arrive.

Also, try giving her a free run in a gerbil-safe room a couple times a week. That will cheer her up.
