Should I give my guinea pig back2007-11-24 22:15:02

I just got a guinea pig from Meijer (kinda like walmart I guess). I got him a couple days ago but he's really bitey! He started just nibbling my fingers and I thought that was just because he was young but then today he bit me really hard and made me bleed. A lot. I've been keeping my fingers away from his mouth since then but I think he keeps trying to bite me when I hold him.

Do you think I should take him back to meijer and try to get a refund? I've read online about ways that might work to train him but I have a little sister that likes playing with him and I'm worried he'll hurt her.

What should I do!

DO NOT return him! Retail stores are not allowed to re-sell returned animals, making it easier for them to stick him in the freezer for euthanasia.

He's probably very nervous due to having only just moved in to his new home, you need to give him time and space to adjust.

What sort of cage are you keeping him in? Try www.guineapigcages.com for advice that might make him a happier pig. Also, does he have a friend? :)

He is probally scared about moving into a new home. Everyday just pet him and talk to him softly WITH OUT picking him up so he knows you arent going to hurt him.

Mites could be the culprit.They make them grouchy and nippy. Mites can't be seen by the naked eye or on skin scrapings. They can be dormant for long periods of time and pop up for no reason. Mites can cause serious problems and are painful for the guinea pig.
