Should I make a guinnea pig cage or buy one
Ive been reading up online on how to care for my guinnea pig and ive found they need big cages...so...what is the way to go do i make a cage or spend lots of money and buy a big cage and does the choroplast and cube idea really work as well as it sounds?
Answers:Yes the cubes and coroplast cage does work as good as it sounds, but if you live in Australia you will have trouble finding the resources to make one!! Cubes and coroplast cages are cheap, easy to build, modify and clean, diffiantly the way to go if possible.
The cages at the pet store are way to small for a guinea pig, 1 guinea pig needs at least 7.5sq ft, let alone the fact that guinea pigs do better in pairs as by nature they are herd animals. If you do decide to get 2 then they will need approximatley 10.5sq ft. The ones with a wire bottom rust (believe me, my friend has one like this and hers ended up rusting) and you should avoid cages with wire rungs all over. These can cause bumble feet. Then there is the cost, most pet store cages cost about $80 and even then they are way to small.
In my case I couldn't make a C&C cage because of where I live. I instead went to my exotic vet and asked about the cages they used. She sold me a brand new one for about $170, it is big, easy to clean and safe for my guinea pigs. I then decided that I needed a play pen for floor time, if I had of known I would have just brought a few extra sections and made it into my own cage. It turned out to be way cheaper and is even bigger than the cage I brought.
