definetly 2. even if you have the time to give your solitary rat oodles of attention, two rats, preferably siblings will be much happier together. They will clean each other and sleep curled up together, eat together, and venture out of the cage together. They play fight sometimes as well, and will be more entertained when you are not around, if they have each other

two rats. Both the same gender unless your wanting babies... They're social animals so unless your going to spend a ton of time with it it'll do a lot better with another rat. It can also shorten their life span if they're all alone because they are social animals.

I would definitely get 2. I got my 1st rat about 3 months ago...she was very energetic and played all of the time. About 2 weeks ago she started acting bored so I bought her a bigger cage... still bored. Last week I decided to get her a friend. Now she is back to her old self and plays all day.

Well you should get two hamsters for two reasons

1. Mating a male and a female rat

2. To keep the rats good company while your gone.
