Should i get a pet rat at petco or petsmart and why2007-11-24 22:14:59Answers:

you are better off getting a rat from a private breeder if you can find one,as the rats from the pet store are usually extremely inbred and have health issues(that is where the bald ones come from inbreeding),i have a tan dumbo female i rescued that was purchased at petco and she is the scruffiest and most unhealthy rat i have ever had my daughter has one from the same place and she is sleek and healthy,i also have a grey with white feet male who is also a rescue he was purchased at petsmart he is a HUGE robust AWESOME specimin of a rat,so i don't know it is a hit or miss type of thing purchasing from a petstore it is the same with any type of pet you get from a petstore,try a rat rescue or private breeder you will probably be better off because they can give you the information you need about the rat

Just go out to a back alley somewhere and get one for free. It'll already know how to fend for it's self.

My rat, Sugar, was purchased at Petsmart before I searched around for rescues. She has almost exceeded the lifespan of the Fancy Rat, and she is very sweet-tempered.
